A Pride of Surin 2018

Saen Don Ta Tradition: A Pride of Surin 2018

Surin Provincial Office, in cooperation with the Surin Provincial Administrative Organisation, Surin Provincial Cultural Office, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) invites everyone to join the “Saen Don Ta Tradition: A Pride of Surin 2018” on 4 October, 2018, at the Phraya Surin Phakdi Si Narong Changwang Monument, Amphoe Mueang, Surin province. This event aims to preserve the local traditions, express gratitude to ancestors and those who have done favour to the province, as well as, promote Surin’s tourism.

Ms Boonyanuth Varnaying, Director of the TAT Surin Office, revealed that this tradition is linked to the worshipping of ancestors, in which the Surin people with Khmer roots return home during this festivity to make merit. They believe that on the first day of the waning moon on the 10th lunar month, the underworld would allow the deceased to return to this realm to receive merit made by their descendants. The Khmer would prepare food, desserts, and Khao Tom (banana with sticky rice in coconut leaves) as offerings at temples on the full moon day on the 10th lunar month. The deceased have 15 days and must return to the underworld after that. The rite includes preparing offerings of food, desserts, fruits, and worshipping accessories to pay respect to Grandfather’s shrine in the village and the landlord spirits. This is done both at home and temples. The rationale behind this is for the ancestral spirits to receive good karma and lessen the impact of their bad deeds. The Khmer have been practicing this ritual for a long time. It is believed if the current generation practices this rite to honour the ancestors, their future generations would do the same. Hence, the ritual will be preserved.
